Charlie este un burlac de patruzeci de ani, plin de succes si cu o cariera de autor de jingle-uri. Locuieste intr-o resedinta langa ocean, in Malibu, California si duce o viata plina de placeri. Dar fratele sau Alan divorteaza dupa doisprezece ani de casnicie si impreuna cu fiul sau Jake (un copil de de zece ani, lenes si mai grasut) se muta impreuna cu Charlie. In acest moment existenta comoda a lui Charlie este zdruncinata. Iar intr-o casa in care nimeni nu este adult, situatia cu greu poate fi tinuta sub control. Cei doi frati au foarte putine lucruri in comun, dar invata sa convietuiasaca si sa ia decizii impreuna referitoare la Jake.
